For several years, NIOSH has been promoting Total Worker Health™ (TWH), a strategy which integrates occupational safety and health protection with health promotion to prevent worker injury and illness and to advance health and well-being. Recognizing there’s not a “one size fits all? approach to TWH, it’s important to understand that wellness programs in the absence of adequate workplace safety and health protection will not achieve the goals of TWH. Successful integration of health protection and health promotion requires an organizational framework with supporting programs, policies and practices to minimize and/or eliminate workplace physical, biological, and psychosocial hazards and risks, promote healthy behaviors, and provide resources for maintaining and optimizing a safe, healthy and productive workforce – both on and off the job. Historically, many of the presentations have focused mostly on the health promotion aspects of TWH. This session is intended to review the role of the industrial hygienist and suggest ideas about how IHs can get involved in TWH at their worksites.
